Literary Check #2
1. The definition of dehumanization is to deprive of human qualities or attributes; divest in individuality. Prior to being transported, Eliezer and the rest of the Jewish community had been optimistic about all things and always seen the positive and bright side to every negative conflict that had come their way, especially his father. Eliezers father was the man on the held the community together and always spoke positively. As they went through the process of getting into the camp and being tortured, many of them changed mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. During New Years, when Eliezer and his dad had already been separated, as far as barracks, he went along to look for his father. He saw his dad standing near a wall with his shoulders sagging as though 'beneath a heavy burden'. A physical appearance of someone most times can say a lot about how they are feeling or doing inside. In this indication, we can tell that his dad has changed a lot. From being someone so lively and awake to seeing him so down and stressed, tells how much he's been through and how much it's taken a toll on him. Later in the story as Eliezer lays in the hospital, he meets a man who is also sickly and needed of care. Assuming that he was a normal human being before being transported to the camp, now he is very care-free. He tells Eliezer that Germany doesn't need sick jews and that he's basically going to die. In this moment of time, the prisoners aren't so much afraid of death but instead they wait for WHEN death will come. Its not a matter of how but instead, when. Also for Eliezer himself, he has changed as a person and even in his faith as a Jew. Instead of having a strong faith in God, his faith is shaken and questioned when he asks why God would allow such pain and suffering to him and those around him. He thought to himself and wondered why he should praise and believe in a a God that he thought would never do these things - his mindset changes. A part of his old self is still there, I believe. A part of him that wants to believe in a God and a part of him that wants to be loving and caring and appreciative - which he still is although you see parts of his old good self slowly starting to fade away. In the beginning when they first came to the camp, he would be on his toes and try to protect him self, his father, and who ever else he could. Now, it was more of a selfish battle - it had to be. Instead of caring for so many others, he began to care more for himself and even less of his father.
2. Eliezers father -
"I ran off to look for my father. And at the same time I was afraid of having to wish him a Happy New Year when I no longer believed in it. He was standing near the wall, bowed down, his shoulders sagging as though beneath a heavy burden."
"And my father? Suddenly I remembered him. How would he pass the selection? He had aged so much"
Eliezer -
"I had watched the whole scene without moving. I kept quiet. In fact I was thinking of how to get further away so that I would not be hit myself. What is more, any anger I felt at that moment was directed, not against the Kapo, but against my father. I was angry with him, for not knowing how to avoid Idek's outbreak. This is what concentration camp life had made of me."
"What are you, my God," ... "compared to this afflicted crowd, proclaiming to You their faith, their anger, their revolt? What does Your greatness mean, Lord of the universe, in the face of all this weakness, this is decomposition, and this decay? Why do You still trouble their sick minds, their crippled bodies?"
"
Guy in hospital with Eliezer -
"You mustn't rejoice too soon, my boy. There's selection here too. More often than outside. Germany doesn't need sick Jews. Germany doesn't need me. When the next transport comes, you'll have a new neighbor. So listen to me, take my advice: get out of the hospital before the next selection!"

Literary Check #1
1.
a. In this book the author, Elie Wiesel, sets up the story in a way that contrasts different perspectives of the Jews while they were going through this whole thing. In the beginning when the race to death began, the German officers arrested leaders of the Jewish community, kept everyone trapped in their homes for three days on pain of death, and took away all gold, jewels, and valuables from the Jews. After this had happened, people like Eliezers mother went on to her daily duties as if everything was normal although you could still tell in her eyes that she was worried and afraid. His father had done the same. People of the town came up to him and asked him what he thought about the situation and he stated, "The yellow star? Oh well, what of it? You don't die of it..." Events such as these showed how optimistic and positive the Jews were. As you continue to read on, you see that fear starts to cripple up on them. After being positive this whole time, a line in the book says, "How avid we were at that moment for one word of confidence, one sentence to say that there were no grounds for fear,.." I think this was the authors way of showing how the Jews were as a whole. It seemed as if they were people of positive mindsets and people of great strength. After reading about how they always tried to reassure themselves and adjust to new infringements, I could automatically see that these Jews were nothing but optimistic and positive no matter what had come their way and what was there in their face then.

Quote #1: "From that moment, everything happened very quickly. The race toward death had begun. The first step: Jews would not be allowed to leave their houses for three days -- on pain of death."
Explanation: I feel that this quote is very important and has a big role in how this all started. The specific words of "the race toward death" becomes very intense because this really was the moment where things changed and the pin point of when everything started to go down hill for the Jews.
Quote #2: "The night before, we had the traditional Friday evening meal. We said the customary grace for the bread and wine and swallowed our food without word. We were, we felt, gathered for the last time round the family table. I spent the night turning over thoughts and memories in my mind, unable to find sleep."
Explanation: This quote from the book had a huge affect on me when he said "gathered for the last time round the family table" I felt that this quote was important to the story especially because of the fact that many families were split apart. Not only that but they also wouldn't be able to do their normal routines or be a normal family once they entered the concentration camps. Family was no longer a value and this moment of having the last meal around the family table was a huge 'wow' moment for me.
Quote #3: "From this moment, you come under the authority of the Germany army. Those of you who still have gold, silver, or watches in your possession must give them up now. Anyone who is later found to have kept anything will be shot on the spot. Secondly, anyone who feels I'll may go to the hospital car. That's all"
Explanation: This was their first major instruction when they reached the concentration camp and this was the pivotal moment when they officially became under the ruling and authority of the German Army. I feel like it was a very drastic and important time for them. Also very hard to accept reality.
Quote #4: ""Do you see that chimney over there? See it? Do you see those flames? (yes, we did see the flames.) Over there -- that's where you're going to be taken. That's your grave, over there. Haven't you realized it yet? You dumb bastards, don't you understand anything? You're going to be burned. Frizzled away. Turned into ashes.""
Explanation: This quote was important because even in history in general, it was crucial to the whole holocaust. In every concentration camp, they were threatened with a fiery furnace if they disobeyed and even for mass genocides because of the hate and resentment the Germans had against the Jews.
Quote #5: "How could it be possible for them to burn people, children, and for the world to keep silent? No, none of this could be true. It was a nightmare..."
Explanation: They were very cruel to the Jews and this was an important quote that I found in the book because it had great significance to how inhumane they were treating them and how they were being treated. It's crazy that such things actually happened once upon a time.

Adolf Hitler
Malina & Elizabeth
Adolf Hitler was born in Branau am Inn, Austria, on April 20, 1889. He was the son of Alois Hitler and Klara Polzl. His father disagreed with hitlers interest in fine art rather than business and distanced himself from his family due to not getting along with his father. Adolf then found interest in German nationalism and did not like being controlled by Austria-Hungary. He did not like the idea of being controlled by others and if he didnt get it his way, he would want others to suffer. Adolf said that “ Germany will either be a world power or will not be at all”. This pride toward Germany corrupted his mind and made him the person he is today. When alois died in 1903 his mother allowed him to drop out of school and applied to the academy of fine arts but got rejected twice. Adolf then applied to serve the german military. Due to already being depressed about his relationship with his father, killing others corrupted his mind to crave killing more and more.
Adolf Hitler was known for his obsessive need for authority over the people of Germany. He was the type of person who constantly wanted control and because of this he did what he needed to do to gain that power. The roots of hitlers anti-semitism are still unknown but he had strong resentment towards the Jewish because he felt that they were the ones to blame for the countries defeat in 1918. When President Paul von Hindenburg died, Hitler saw that as an oppourtunity to become fuhrer, supreme ruler of Germany. He continued to be even more of a selfish and heartless guy towards the Jews. A little after the war had ended, Hitler joined the National Socialist German Workers’ Party A.K.A Nazis. In March 1933, the first concentration camp was opened in Dachau, Germany consisting most of Communists. These German camps held about 27,000 people in “protective custody”. Germany started doing mass transportations and they started by taking the people who were least useful, for example, the sick, old, weak, and young ones. In this time, more than 12,000 jews were killed daily making this one of the biggest genocide events occured in history.
Famous quotes of Adolf Hitler:
“Humanitarianism is the expression of stupidity and cowardice.”
“I do not see why man should not be just as cruel as nature.”
“If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.”

Boston Marathon Bombing
http://www.history.com/topics/ boston-marathon-bombings
On April 15, 2013, the 117th annual Boston, Massachusetts marathon took place. There were about 23,000 participants who had been involved in the event that day and unknowingly and unfortunately, two bombs had been set off near the finish line of the marathon. Three people had been killed and around 260 of them had been seriously injured. According to CNN news and FBI, the two bombs were contained in pressure cookers and hidden in the backpacks of the suspects. 8 year old Martim Richard was cheering on his dad at the end of the finish line and was one of the victims who had been killed that day because of the bombings. His sister, 6 years old, had lost her leg but was fortunate enough to have survived the attack. President Barrack Obama stated, “We will get to the bottom of this,” the president said. “We will find who did this, and we will find out why they did this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.”

Allusion Poem Final
The human world.... is a mess
but she was innocent and sweet
yet curious of the things she not yet knows
only wanting to experience things she was always told no
curious yet scared of what could be,
whats so bad about rebelling?
Someone hurry and please tell me
Her parents had loved her dearly, there was no doubt
they hid her from all the bad things of this world
but she just wanted a way out
in the sea, protected and sheltered for all her life
all she was taught was to be obeying, friendly, and nice
who would've guess this would be
the innocent and sweet girl turned into someone she never wanted to see
She took the risk and went after something so unsure
he was different, way different
she was a bold and strong girl yet fragile and sensitive
she never wanted something (someone) so much
who would've thought that something she was always told was wrong,
could feel so right?
He made her happy and happiness was all she felt
she fell faster than expected but still,
deep down, a part of her thought it would last
she was so wrong because now
he's only a part of her past
All she felt was hurt, broken, and crushed
who knows, maybe things were just a little too rushed
he told her she had done something wrong
but that's all he said
and though it hurt, she remained strong
maybe it just wasn't meant to be
the least she deserved was an explanation
but she hadn't even gotten that
he's different, way different but
its just another lesson learned
she should've listened to what they had to say
but she has no doubt that she'll be okay
wondering free, wishing she could be,
part of their world
